Oh now I get it, the Father is a widower, he worked for the East India Company in the 17th century and had to take his children to Balia near Bencoolen. They are having adventures in the shoadow of the mountains of Mount Batur and Mount Bromo.
Their Father is working to manage the pepper plantations.
His children are threatened by the legendary witch doctor Calon Arang.

" "A london 12 year old boy and 9 year old sister must travel with their father to his assignment in Balia, near Bencoolen, the East India Company's Sumatran pepper producing facility. Since the mother has passed-away the father must arrange for a nurse, a tutor, and housekeepers in their estate in the hills. The active Volcanos Mount Batur and Mount bromo, rainforest waterfalls, rice terraces make for exotic scenery to have adventures in. They hear rumors of the Calon Arang legend, who surfaces in the story as an opponent and point of conflict. Exploration, relationship building with the nanny, exposure to the unique aspects of the foreign culture, threat from the unknown Calon Arang (or someone/somegroup pretending to be the witch-doctor, and threatening the children). Unexpected assistance, father too busy with work comes in late in the crisis to redeem himself of his inattentiveness that led to the danger."
