There's no information about the white space to the left and right of the individual rectangles. So I get the impression that that doesn't matter: that is the one on the left gets smaller and the one on the right bigger, it's compensated 1:1 so long as they're both squares. But that is still a guess ultimately.
These look really difficult. My guess is that they cover a quadrant so pi*8^2/4 = 16*pi. I'm too lazy to reason it out, just going by intuition but I am interested in learning of my guess is correct.
By the way, do you care to use a permanent image host? The images are simply embedded so this will disappear when it's removed from the host.
