random / Vibe Coding General Anonymous No.102 [View Thread]
I've been trying out various free tier LLM coding agents. I'm particularly impressed by grok, antigravity, and replit, although the latter has very strict allowances, it's really just a preview. I like that I can vibecode on my phone now, it's the most productive thing I can do on it.

So far I've made this image board, am tweaking around with a few other image board scripts, and I'm developing a bullet journal app.

Do you vibecode? What are your projects and what agents do you use?

if you have the model, original res, prompt, seed you can save the image as a 64kB jpeg, and regenerate
it at full resolution at a later date

tech / Image Gen Tools and Tricks. Anonymous No.103 [View Thread]
Image gen like stable-diffusion.cpp embeds generation text and parameters into a tEXt field, but png is big and uses a lot of space, sometimes you want them batch converted to jpeg.

but naive convert from imagemagick/graphicsmagick fails to preserve the image gen parameters, in a way that other image tools can use

this does that
-------------------------------------
for f in *.png; do
out="${f%.png}.jpg"
exiftool -b -parameters "$f" > /tmp/params.txt 2>/dev/null
convert "$f" -quality 92 "$out"
exiftool -UserComment="$(</tmp/params.txt)" "$out" >/dev/null
done
---------------------------------------------------------
cheers, have a handmaiden

What do these things like context window, model size, etc. mean? How to determine from the specs how good a model is?
>>
Anonymous No.73
>>71
q4 with same number of params will give you less accurate thinking, but will require less RAM. Most people run q4,q5,q6 depending on model.
These are tradeoffs, with a given amount of RAM, you might want a smaller (number of parameters) model at q8, or a larger one at q3,q4.

I had to review this for myself. two different types within each layer: attention and FFN (feed forward network). The FFN is less sensitive to quantization, so you prefer KM, KL over KS if you have the space.
That introduces another tradeoff, Do you prefer Q3
KL or Q4K_S? depends on the model which one ends up working better.

tech / New idea: reversing directory hierarchy Anonymous No.63 [View Thread]
Directory trees can help with organization but it can also be annoying to remember where everything's located. Compare this to something like Evernote where you just have a flat list of entries and use tagging for optional organization. Can the filesystem hierarchy function like this?

What if we reverse the directory hierarchy so that all files are located in the working directory at all times, and tab autocompletion is optionally used to resolve ambiguity? For example, if there is file.txt\user\home\ and file.txt\etc\, then typing file.txt followed by tab lets the user select from those two, no matter what the working dir is. If there is only one file called file.txt, then simply listing that suffices.

Most filenames among personal documents are unique, so it'd provide quick access to each one. Users should still specify the location of each file, and then they can still list a specific type of file with ls Documents\~.

So tab goes in the other direction. This makes it easier to see where files called file.txt or dirs called Documents are listed, but not as easy to see what is listed inside Documents\~. With normal tab auto-complete, that will show mid-command what's listed in there, but it cannot auto-complete in both directions so instead it will list each instance of Documents and not what's inside of them. That is the trade-off.

Would you use such a shell?

random / What is Will-Power? Anonymous No.30 [View Thread]
I was listening to a podcast on Henry Hazlitt (1894-1993) and they mentioned his book on Will Power.

https://archive.org/stream/way-to-will-power-the-hazlitt-henry-1894-1993/way%20to%20will-power%2C%20The%20-%20Hazlitt%2C%20Henry%2C%201894-1993_djvu.txt

The style was too 18th century for me so i guided Qwen3.8 through an analysis of it until I felt it got it right, This is the tl;dr of a book many people felt was important.

Your tl;dr;tl;dr is:

Will-Power is the ability to keep a remote
desire so vividly in mind that it overrides competing immediate
desires. It is the capacity to willingly pay the "price" of future
advantage by sacrificing present comfort.

----------------------------------

Henry Hazlitt’s The Way to Will Power (1922) is a rigorously heterodox treatise that dismantles popular, mystical conceptions of "willpower" and replaces them with a precise, desire-based model of human action. Written decades before the rise of modern therapeutic culture or systemic determinism, Hazlitt’s work operates firmly within the tradition of classical psychology and moral philosophy. It demands personal responsibility, intellectual honesty, and a clear-eyed assessment of human nature, eschewing both soft determinism and the excuse-making that characterizes much contemporary self-help literature.

Below is a precise, analytic exposition of the text’s core arguments, followed by a critique of its internal tensions and limitations.
